Description:

Join us on October 15th for a stress relieving, fun hour (30 min for some) of exercise at

La Jolla Shores. Come hang out with fellow UCSD students, West Coast Collegiate

triathletes, Tri Club of San Diego members, and local members of the San Diego area.

Come see the entire span of athletes from pro to first time racers in this beautiful 500

meter swim followed by a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) run all on the beach in La Jolla. For more

course details see COURSE INFO.

This event will be fully and completely sustainable? What does that even mean? It

means that we have taken measures ranging from pre-race planning, course location,

transportation, equipement, food, drink, prizes, energy sources etc to make sure that

the local community is involved as much as possible and that this event and your

participation in it places the least amount of carbon footprint on our beautiful planet. For

more info, see GO GREEN on our website.

Coveskipper? What's that about? The aquathon was invented over 500 million years ago

when the first creatures learned to leave the liquid environment that covered our earth and

run up onto land to enjoy the wonderful gas we've likened to calling oxygen. This creature (its

exact species is still debated) didn't walk onto land, it ran and on October 15th, you will

emerge from the water and run onto land, a skill not many creatures these days can say

they've got a handle on. You will be right up there with a creature called the Mudskipper

(but seeing as you hopefully won't encounter too much mud at La Jolla Shores) you will

earn your evolutionary title as Coveskipper for the day :)

Where does the money go? Putting on sustainable races, while it has the potential to save

costs in the future, can still be costly. First the money goes towards covering the event costs

(including lifeguards! safety aint cheap, but your life is worth it :) Once the event is paid for all

the funds go towards helping sustain the UCSD Triathlon team - a group of about 80 UCSD

undergrad and graduate students who dedicate their time to training and racing across the state

and country. Our two goals are to help bring the sport of triathlon to as many students as possible

because we fully believe that being a student-athlete is the key to living a healthy balanced life.

However, triathlon is a costly sport and helping get our new members basic gear is one of

on-going priorities. Second, our team is here to develop some of the top athletes in the country.

Our team has a history of doing very well on the National Stage and we want to be able to fund

and support these amazingly hardworking students while they push themselves as hard in the

class room as they do outside of it.

 Partnership with Ecorooted

The UCSD Triathlon team is partnering with a local student run group called Ecorooted, a

grassroots organization whose goal it is to spread environmental awareness through positive

support, action and education. Ecorooted will be at the Coveskipper and will be helping meet

the events sustainability goals

Course Info:

The transition are will be set up just south of the main lifegaurd tower at La Jolla Shores. You will

see a coned off area with the timing system set up along with the FINISH banner.

The race will start at the VERY SOUTH end of La Jolla Shores. We will all walk down to the race

start to go over the race course before we start. There will also be a START banner posted for those

who wish to get in ahead of time.

SWIM: a 500m course that will be 3 sides of a rectangle. You will swim out past the break, take a

right hand turn at the first bouy, swim north until reaching the secon buoy and make a second right

to shore. Here you will find transition area where you can ditch your wetsuit (if wearing one)

and pick up your running shoes (if wearing them...)

BIKE: haha, gotcha! no bike :P

RUN: Head north out of transition along the beach and run north until you reach the Scripps Pier

(large wooden contraption from which smart outdoorsy people do research). Turn around the

cones at one of the pillars and run back. Return to transition and then u-turn again to complete a

complementary lap. Second time around you can cross the finish line (or head out again for a victory lap!)
