2007 Santa Barbara Sprint
Our very own Darlene Hunt participated in the Santa Barbara Sprint Triathlon over the weekend. She was the only one from the team in attendance, but she made her presence known. She absolutely dominated the race. Right from the beginning she sprinted into the lead in the swim and never looked back. In the 500 yd ocean swim in the chilly waters of Santa Barbara she quickly opened what would become a 55 second lead. Only 5 men were even able to beat her swim split. Darlene wasn't finished after the swim. Her lead grew even further over the 6 mile bike course. She put about a minute and a half over the next fastest bike split. Quite a feat for a 6 mile bike leg! She ended up averaging over 21 mph. Perhaps that was due to the added motivation of having a motorcycle escort the entire way. For the run, which is Darlene's least favorite, she managed to put together a very respectable time. Her run seems to be improving with every race. Darlene's final time ended up being over 3 minutes faster than the second place finisher in her wire-to-wire win. Very impressive for a race that took only about 40 minutes. The local newspaper was so impressed that they featured her in an article on the cover of the sports section with a photo of Darlene doing her first fist pump after her first victory!

Darlene has proven herself to be a very capable triathlete this season and will be one to watch out for in next year's collegiate series!
