Sadauckas makes it three By Kid Nebraska in La Jolla, CA The 2007 edition of the Tour de Donuts the biggest in its seven year history. There were close to 40 attendees, of which 25 took the start at Golden Donut in San Diego. There were radical changes to the course for the 2007 Tour. It featured the most climbing on record, added a KOM, and changed location the final hill climb time trial stage. Despite the challenging course, 21 of the 25 starters finished the Tour, almost certainly a record. After nearly 6 hours of difficult competition, UCSD cycling alumus Matt Sadauckas (retired) withstood a tough challenge on the final stage from the Chris Burnham (UCSD Triathlon) to win his third Tour de Donuts. Sadauckas's victory was helped substantially by an opportunistic time bonus he collected at the Presidio KOM. Those 10 seconds proved enough to keep from losing the jersey to the triathlon team. Two triathletes cracked the podium, however, and 3 of the top 5 finishers were from UCSD Triathlon. Nehring held on (literally!) to finish fourth and rounding out the top 5 was Chris Nekarda (UCSD Cycling), the highest placed active UCSD Cycling member. The big story of the day, though, was the amazing donut eating from Ramlah Nehring (UCSD Triathlon). Not only did she set the all-time record for female donut consumption, she took a commanding overall lead on stage 3. After trailing by only 1 donut for much of that time, a last-stage attempt to surpass Nehring by Kevin Wood (UCSD Cycling) resulted in explosive puking. Simply put, no one could touch her count. All told, competitiors ate 234 donuts, or the energy equivalent of about 52,700 calories!
