| UCSD 2nd at UCLA IronBruin Sprint |
|
With 2 days of recovery after a hard week of training, the Tritons ventured to Los Angeles for the UCLA IronBruin, a sprint triathlon consisting of a 400 meter pool swim, 13.5 miles on the bike and a 5K run. With the start of daylight savings time looming before the race, the Tritons all attempted to get to bed early before the race. Some stayed in hotels, but most enjoyed the hospitality of a very large house of friends in the inner city. The 4:20 (previously 3:20) awakening time was not well received, but everyone forced themselves out of bed and sleepily piled into their cars. Upon arrival, the Tritons claimed a spot in T2 for their running shoes and then made their way to T1 and the pool area. The Tritons warmed up in a side pool while they awaited their start time. The warm-up pool was a welcome respite from the frigid morning, though the time eventually came to make our way to the Olympic-sized racing pool. The race was run as a time-trial, with each contestant leaving 5 seconds after the person in front of them. The swim consisted of 8 laps snaking through the crowded pool. With a very short jog to the transition area, the Tritons quickly transitioned onto the bicycles. The bike course consisted of 4 laps of a tour of UCLA, beginning with a steep downhill and subsequent turn. The bike course took many newcomers by surprise, with one small and one large hill, which separated the velophiles from the newbies. Those who survived the bike course heeded Coach Mac¿s instructions and hurriedly changed into their running shoes and tackled the 5K run. The run made a loop past UCLA's Bear statue and ran parallel to much of the bike course. The finish was easily seen from far away and the Tritons expended their last bit of energy to get to the finish line as fast as possible. Top finishers for UCSD men were Marc Schommer in 2nd, Robert Krohn in 5th, and Sante Kotturi in 7th. Top finishers for UCSD women were Sarah Kavaler in 3rd, Jennifer Stokes in 13th and Vanessa Davis in 16th. These results earned UCSD 2nd place for the Men, Women and Overall team categories. After the race, the team mingled in the large expo area, chowed on free pizza, and enjoyed free massages. Thanks to UCLA for a great race! Article by: Ty Kubart
