Known by many different names – contre
la montre by the French, the race of truth by cyclists, or perhaps
more appropriately by us triathletes, the race between T1 and T2 –
the individual time trial pits the athlete against the clock in a
high intensity race of endurance and self-imposed suffering.
Successful time trialing requires intense concentration, the ability
to provide strong, consistent power output, and the capability to
operate near ones anaerobic threshold for an extended period of
time.
Fiesta Island is home to the one of the flattest and
fastest road courses in San Diego and with today’s conditions being
some of the best seen, it was sure to provide some terrific
performances. Decked out in full race attire including carbon wheels
and aero helmets, the Tritons lined up ready to attack the course,
everyone looking to see how their training had paid off.
Leaving
on 30 second intervals the 25 riders set off on their three-lap, 20
kilometer time trial. The squad’s performances mirrored the
conditions of the day, with the returners posting better times than
in last year's edition of the race. The defending national champion
women were led by Sarah Kavaler with a time of 31:53 at an average
speed of 23.4 miles per hour. Following Sarah and rounding out the
top three women were Allison Johnston and Lisa Fong. Leading the
men’s squad was Robert Krohn with a time of 28:22 at an average
speed of 26.3 miles per hour, faster than the island's speed limit!
Close on his heels were Peter Borak and Marc Schommer, both within a
mere seven seconds of the lead. The squad had seven members break the
30 minute barrier, and 18 athletes with an average speed of 20 miles
per hour or better.
It was obvious that everyone gave
their all in this grueling race, but the smiles afterwards hinted
that each person enjoyed the challenge, as well. Surely, the Time
Trial Challenge also showed the speed, strength, and depth of this
year’s team, foreshadowing the great race performances that are
sure to come! Article by: Lucas Keenen Photos by: Amy Davenport
