| Tritons take first at UCSB Triathlon |
|
It was a windy morning at the Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial triathlon held on the UCSB campus. The advertized 800 yd ocean swim turned out to be much closer to an 1100 yd swim. The water temperature was a chilly 56 degrees when the athletes lined up at the start. UCSD showed up in numbers to this event at nearly 20 athletes. As soon as the Tritons hit the watertheir hands and feet went completely numb. Daniel Derkacs was in the front of the swim pack with the rest of the men's team not far behind. Team Captain Tom Scherbart got slightly disoriented in the large swells and found himself lost in a large field of kelp. Derkacs was first onto the bike course with a police motorcycle to lead his way. After a long battle with a 43 year old age group athlete Daniel was first on the run and with a blazing fast run split he was first to cross the finish line. Scherbart made up time on the bike and the run but after bad start was unable to rejoin the race leaders finishing as 11th overall collegiate. Not far behind Scherbart was the first overall female Amanda Felder who won by a landslide even though she was taking the race easy in order to stay fresh for Nationals the following weekend. UCSD 's fourth athlete to cross the finish line was Adam Stobl with the exact overall time as Felder. Dalene Hunt in her second triathlon ever scored fourth overall for the woman's team. Also not to be overlooked a great race for the new triathlete Blair Ryan scoring as 10th overall female with veteran Ramlah Nehring only 2 spots behind finishing 12th.
