On Sunday the 13th of February a large portion of the triathlon team traveled up North to the UC Irvine campus to participate in the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference’s first official race of the year. There the team faced down other squads such as Stanford, UCSB, and San Diego State. The course consisted of a 400 yard pool swim, a hilly and technical 13.5 mile bike ride, and a 5 kilometer run. On the men’s side, the race was won by UCSD’s own William (Bill) Jones in a time of 1:01:14, while UCSD’s Daniel Heineck took 2nd overall. On the women’s side Joana Coker took 2nd place in the women’s race for UCSD with a time of 1:10:11 in her first ever triathlon, while Gina Horath was robbed of a 3rd place finish, but still managed to finish 4th overall for women. All in all it was a great day for the Tritons with great individual performances and team wins on both the men and women’s side of the field.
