Course

All USAT rules will be in effect!

Swim

The swim course will run approximately 500 yards in open water and will be denoted by buoys. In February the water in Mission Bay will be cold (mid 50's), so we highly recommend that all participants wear a wetsuit. If you don't have a wetsuit, you can rent one from a number of vendors (e.g. wetsuitrental.com). The swim will be started in waves space 5 minutes apart. On race morning, please note which wave you are in and what time your wave is scheduled to start.

Bike

The bike route is approximately 12 miles and will consist of 3 counter clockwise laps around the perimeter of Fiesta Island. The course is very flat but tends to have a headwind on one side and a tailwind on the other.

Please note that all USAT rules will be enforced. Among other things, this means:

  • No recumbent bikes allowed!
  • Do not pick up your bike until you strap your helmet!
  • Do not draft! You may not ride closer than 3 bike lengths behind another ride, unless are are executing a pass. All passes must be completed in 15 seconds. It will be easy to draft as more riders enter the course. Big brother is watching you!
  • After being passed, it is your responsibility to fall back out of the passing riders draft zone.
  • Ride on the right. Pass on the left. Do not block! Stay to the right except when passing. You may not impede another riders progress.

Run

The run is 5 km and starts at the transition area and follows along the outer perimeter of the island in a counter-clockwise direction to the turn around point.
