Sustainablity - Going Green

We aim to produce a sustainable event through reducing our impact on the environment and involving the community in every aspect of our events. Tritonman has taken a pledge of sustainability through Athletes for a Fit Planet and is seeking ReSport certification.

What YOU can do:

You can help us conserve resources and reduce waste in a couple of ways.
  1. Bring your own swim cap.
Most swim caps distributed at triathlons are used once and then discarded. If you have one already, consider bringing your own and using it at the race.
  2. Bring your own reusable coffee mug.
Tritonman is proud to serve coffee roasted by Peets Coffee and Tea. Help us reduce the number of disposable cups that we send to the landfill! Bring your own coffee mug to the race. We'll happily refill it as many times as you like.
  3. Carpool or ride your bike.
Save gas, alleviate the congested parking, and even warm up your legs before the race. If you'd like to carpool, please sign onto the triathlete.com forum and offer/request a ride.
  4. Donate to offset your carbon emissions.

Athletes for a Fit Planet

We have taken the pledge of sustainability from Athletes for a Fit Planet. We encourage you to take the Sustainability Pledge for Athletes and look at their Events Directory for more sustainable events to support!

ReSport Certification

As triathletes at UCSD we spend a lot of time swimming, cycling, and running outside, and we're lucky to be able to enjoy the beautiful weather, terrain, and beaches of San Diego. Unfortunately, we're aware that global warming, resource exploitation, and short-term thinking are endangering our lifestyle and our communities. We're also aware that most organized sporting events are not planned with long-term impacts in mind.

We don't accept this! The UCSD Triathlon Team has decided to confront global environmental problems by acting locally.

Tritonman 2010 was the first sustainable triathlon hosted by a collegiate triathlon team. The race was certified as sustainable by the Council for Responsible Sport. For 2012, we will continue building upon our experiences and efforts from previous years to make Tritonman friendly to the surrounding environment and the local community.
